Question 1- Trailers

In what ways does your Media Production use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Sub-Genre
We did some research on the genre horror and we looked at what zombie films already existed so that we could see what the conventions of a zombie film were so we could use them in our own zombie trailer so that the audience can recognise that the sub-genre is zombie.

Costumes

When thinking about the costumes that the zombies should have I looked at the zombie film, "Warm Bodies". In this film they have very casual clothing with blood stains on them so we decided to do the same to the characters in our trailer as we wanted the audience to recognize them as zombies and to make them more realistic.

Camera Techniques

In the film, "Warm Bodies", they have an extreme close up of the zombie's eye when introducing him so we thought that it would be a good idea to use this shot in out trailer when she changes into a zombie to make it more obvious that she is transforming into a zombie. We also challenged this because our character is female and he is male, he face looks very pale and we used black makeup around the eye.

Props

In the film, "Resident Evil Apocalypse" they use guns as weapons because when you watch zombie films, the way of killing a zombie is by shooting them in the head so we challenged this by using a metal bat as a weapon as it was hard for us to use a gun and the bat made it more unique.

Characters

In our trailer, we had a final girl to make it stand out more than other zombie films that don't have a final girl however in "Resident Evil Apocalypse" there is a woman in the film that is strong and powerful and we wanted to do the same in our trailer so we have a scene where the final girl is fighting the zombie with the bat. By having a final girl , this challenges how there is a female survivor and how females are normally seen as weak and vulnerable.

Story line

In the film, "Dawn of the Dead" they show a news channel on the TV we did the same to make our storyline clearer about people turning into zombies after eating a burger.

Lighting

In the zombie film, "REC" they use low key lighting when the camera shows a zombie so we used low key lighting in our trailer when the zombies appear as this makes them look scarier as you can't see them very clearly.

Setting

The zombie film, "Evil Dead" is set in the woods in one scene so we thought that it would be good to use the woods for a chase scene in our trailer. "Evil Dead" gave us an idea of another location to use for a zombie film.

Text

In the zombie parody, "Shaun of the Dead" it uses one word text to say "Don't Call Shaun" so I used one word at a time to say, "Can you escape the bite?" as this creates a build up of suspense.

  1. Good effort C+/B-
Add greater analysis of the meaning behind these conventions - why they have become established as defining characteristics of the genre - "We also challenged this because our character is female and he is male, he face looks very pale and we used black makeup around the eye." - BUT WHY do this - dead?
